Abstract
This study aims at (1) identifying the figures of speech in the novel Bumi Manusia as they are translated into English; (2) analyzing the various strategies used by the translator to translate figures of speech in the novel Bumi Manusia into English; (3) evaluating the appropriateness of the translation of figures of speech from Indonesian into English. From the analysis, it is found the figures of speech in Bumi Manusia consist of five types: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and idiom. The translation pf figures of speech into English has been done well through various strategies. This conclusion is deduced from the evaluation results which show that from 375 figures of speech, only 7 figures of speech (1.8%) are rendered inappropriately.
