Abstract

Speaking is a complex skill, because the students have to memorize a bunch of vocabulary, have to master grammar, and have confidence. According to the results of observation in SMPN 2 Binjai Hulu, there are three problems of speaking English in the eighth-grade students. The first is the individual factor. Some students state that they have difficulties in expressing ideas orally, are unconfident to speak English, the students have low motivation in learning English, and are not too interested in learning English. The second problem is the environmental factor. They mostly come from families who have a low or middle social economy level, and they have limited attention from their parents. The third is because of the condition. Since pandemic covid-19, the students come to the school only once a week because there is no signal strength. It causes the students to only learn from home without explaining more by the teacher. This study was conducted to find out whether the students who are taught by utilizing YouTube videos are more effective than those who are taught by using the textbook-based technique at the eighth grade of SMPN 02 Binjai Hulu. A YouTube video in this study means the researcher designed the material into a video sourced by a YouTube application. This research is focused on asking and offering help because the researcher teaches the students based on the syllabus. The research design in this study is quasi-experimental. The researcher collects the data in a month. The data is collected from the pre-test and post-test of the control group and experimental group. The researcher does the different way in teaching speaking by using YouTube because of the location and the situation. The researcher use video from YouTube based on the syllabus and then the researcher download it. Because this location has no signal strength, so the researcher sends the video by share-it application for the student who does not have signal Wi-Fi in their home. Then, the researcher asks the students to make a dialogue in pairs and asks them to send it to the researcher by WhatsApp or shareit application. The result of this study can be concluded that the students who are taught by using YouTube videos and those who are taught by using text-book show a significant difference. It means YouTube video is more effective than those who are not. It is found that the value of the t-test is 0.000. The mean score of the pretest from the experimental group is 61.61 and the control group is 59.29. While the mean score of the post-test in the experimental group is 74.11 and the control group is 61.43. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
