Abstract

Vocabulary plays an important role in learning English and this also becomes the main component in four skills which are speaking, writing, reading, and listening, whereas the students have difficulties in understanding and memorizing vocabulary. The researcher helped the students in mastering vocabulary through digital flashcards. Thus, at the finding of this research, the researcher found the effectiveness of digital flashcards in Socrative in teaching vocabulary mastery. The researcher used Quasi-Experimental to research SMP Negeri 7 Malang. The research was started on March 16, 2021 until April 7, 2021. This study was carried out during 4 meetings in the experimental class and control class. There are 27 students in each class. The students in the experimental class were taught using Socrative, while the students in the control class were taught using PowerPoint Flashcard. To find out the result of the hypothesis, the researcher analyzed the students’ scores using an independent sample t-test and N-gain. The result of this study found that there was a significant difference between students who are taught using Socrative and those who were taught using PowerPoint Flashcard. The Sig. value showed 0.04 which means the hypothesis is accepted. Another result of this study is Socrative as a digital flashcard media is more effective than PowerPoint Flashcard on students’ vocabulary mastery. The statistical result was 0.37 in the experimental class and -0.35 in the control class. It means Socrative is effective enough to teach vocabulary mastery. The researcher finds 2 challenges during research. The first is a matter of time management. It is happened because of students’ indiscipline and a problem of their signal strength. The second is the students do not understand the feature in Socrative. However, the researcher finds the result of the mean score in the experimental class is higher than the result in the control group. In other words, the students who are given Socrative show higher achievement than the students who are given PowerPoint Flashcards. Thus, it is concluded that the digital flashcard in Socrative is an effective medium for teaching vocabulary mastery.
