Abstract

Picture Series, Procedure Text, Speaking Proficiency.Speaking is one of skill that must be mastered by students because it makes the students to execute conversations, give the ideas and exchange the information with others. However, in teaching and learning process teachers are difficult to implement speaking on English subject. Therefore, English teacher try to apply picture series to stimulate them for speak. Picture series is one of a media which help the students to express their idea and it encourage the students to think about a definite new vocabulary, structure and provide them with the basic materials for their speaking proficiency. Moreover, using pictures is a very useful activity in teaching speaking to understand the material in procedure text, which they can develop ideas based on the picture. The objective of this study was to carried out whether Picture series was effective on students speaking proficiency. Quasi experimental design was used to conduct the experiment at SMK NEGERI 2 SINGOSARI. The researcher was used simple random sampling technique in selecting the sample of the research groups. There were two groups which consisted of 30 for experimental group and 30 for control group. The first group was XI RPL 1 as experimental group, and XI RPL 2 as control group. The main data were collected through pre-test and post-test and were analyzed by using SPSS version 22 for Windows. The speaking test was conduct in the pre-test and post-test. Furthermore, the score of both of groups were analyzed by using independent sample t-test. The result of independent sample t-test showed that the significant value was found 0.000 which less than 0.05, (0.000 < 0.05) it concluded that there is a significant difference between students who were taught by using picture series and who were taught by using mind mapping, and for alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and (H0) was rejected. On the other words, there was a significant difference between students who were taught by using Picture series and those who were taught by using Mind mapping in their speaking proficiency at SMK NEGERI 2 SINGOSARI. Pictures make students more interested because they have enough opportunity to develop their ideas based on the pictures, not only reading a text then memorized it. Pictures also give motivation to the students because there is no limitation to explore their ability as maximal as they can. However, the researcher found that picture series had low effective on speaking proficiency. It proved on the result of gain index which the score was 0.22 for the experimental group and 0.09 for control group, both of classes had the score which less than 0.3 (0.22 < 0.3) for experimental group and (0.09 < 0.3) for control group. There are several factors which make picture series had low effective on this study such as; The sizes of picture is too small. So, when the researcher given picture to every group that consisting of five to six students, it caused the problem in teaching and learning process which make the students confused about picture that they get. In addition, only a few students are work on another was passive. It caused the disorder or commotion in the classroom.
