Abstract

Guessing Game Technique, Descriptive Text, Speaking Skill.The researcher used guessing game to improve students speaking skill. Guessing game is an interesting and enjoyable game that was used in this study. Meanwhile, guessing game also cooperative game, the students can work with their group to solve the problem. In this study the researcher focused on using guessing game to teach descriptive text . The material was about animals, and to play guessing game one student gives clues and another students try to guess. The purpose of this study is to know the students improvement in their score after using guessing game and the students’ responses toward guessing game in teaching. The researcher used classroom action research in this study. The subject of this research was seventh grade student Junior High School in SMP Kristen Petra Malang. The researcher had three perception in this study there were students’ were score, students’ attitude and students’ responses by collecting the data. The data was collected using research instrument such as observation checklist was used to know the students’ attitude, test was used to know the students’ score and questionnaire was used to know the students’ responses. The researcher also decided the criteria of success for speaking test was 71% of all the students increase their speaking with the minimum score at least 71 based on KKM. The observation have criteria of success was 75%. For the students responses, the researcher have target for criteria of success was 80%. After conducting the test and analyzing the result of the observation checklist and questionnaire, the researcher in this study did 2 cycle. In Cycle 1 the students showed positive responses toward guessing game in teaching learning process. It could be seen from the percentage that was 80,7%. Yet, the students score and observation checklist did not meet criteria of success in cycle 1 so the researcher revised the implementation in cycle 2. The researcher revised the material and classroom management. The researcher found the students attitude was better in cycle 2 with the result 82,5%. Meanwhile, the result of post-test showed that the students could increase their score in cycle 2 with the percentage score 75,5%. In conclusion, guessing game could be alternative strategy in teaching learning to improve students’ speaking skill. Guessing game not only improve students speaking skill but also students attitude toward teaching learning process. The students could express their idea, became active and enjoy to join the class by using guessing game.
