Abstract

Keywords : Herringbone Technique, Reading ComprehensionHerringbone Technique is a technique in teaching where the students work in pairs and analyze comprehension of the main idea by plotting who, what, when, where, why, and how question on a Herringbone diagram. The aim of this study is to improve the students’ mastery in reading comprehension. The objective of research was to know the effectiveness of Herringbone Technique on students’ reading comprehension mastery at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Tutur in the academic year 2017/2018. This school was chosen by researcher because the students got difficulties to comprehend the text. Based on the problem, the researcher tried to find an alternative media by using Herringbone Technique. This study used quasi-experimental design in the form of two groups pre test - post test design. There were VIII B as the experimental group and VIII E as the control group. The samples were 59 participants. In experimental group was taught by using Herringbone Technique while in control group was treated by using Direct Instruction Technique. Both of groups were given two tests which consist of pre test and post test to collect the data. This research was conducted on May 2018. The result of the research showed that the mean score of pre test in experimental group was 53.23 and the control group was 57.68. Then, after giving the treatments, the mean score of post test in experimental group was 70.16 and the control group was 61.96. After getting pre test post test, the researcher analyzed the data by using Independent Sample T-test in SPSS 22 for windows. Based on the calculation, the significant 2-tailed was 0.007 less than 0.05. It means that H0 was rejected. From the data, the researcher concluded that the students who were taught by using Herringbone Technique had significant effect than those who were treated by using Direct Instruction Technique on reading comprehension mastery. The suggestion for English teacher should encourage him/herself to find the best technique in teaching reading comprehension, especially in reading narrative text to the students and the teacher should use Herringbone Technique as an alternative in teaching reading narrative text.
