Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) offers new possibilities for addressing this challenge. AI chatbots, conversational agents, speech-recognition tools, and generative AI can provide low-pressure opportunities for students to practice speaking, develop ideas, and receive feedback. Du and Daniel (2024) found that AI-powered chatbots can support speaking practice, confidence, motivation, pronunciation, and aspects of speaking anxiety. Similarly, AI-mediated interaction can improve speaking performance and WTC (Fathi et al., 2024). However, AI should complement rather than replace human communication. Crompton et al. (2024) highlight both the affordances and limitations of AI, while Wang et al. (2024) show that different AI environments may produce different effects on WTC. Therefore, the key challenge is to use AI to move learners from silence and teacher-dependent responses toward confidence, learner-initiated speaking, peer interaction, and authentic communication.
