Abstract

Implementation, Self-Assessment, Speaking skill.Self-assessment is a technique that the researcher uses in learning process where the students got a chance to assess their weakness and strength in speaking English skill by himself. This research aims at finding out the implementation of Self-Assessment on the students speaking skill at second grade students of SMPN 2 Wagir Malang. The objective of the study is to describe the implementation of self-assessment in improving students’ performance in speaking English skill and the students’ responses towards the implementation of self-assessment in improving students’ speaking English skill. The research design is descriptive qualitative research. The population of this research is the second grade students of SMPN 2 Wagir. The sample of this research is VIII A class consist of 30 students then the researcher took 4 students who are varies in speaking ability. In this study, the researcher described the process of the implementation of self-assessment technique on improving students’ speaking skill and described the students’ responses towards the implementation of self-assessment on students’ speaking skill. It is conducted to help students in teaching learning process. The researcher implemented the technique in two meetings. Based on the students’ daily assessment, the researcher found the students’ weaknesses and strengths in every meeting were different. There were students had weakness in pronunciation and grammar and there were some students had weaknesses in fluency and pronunciation. In their improvement of speaking performance in every meeting also different, one student improved her vocabulary and grammar, while the other one improved his pronunciation and fluency. The result of the students’ speaking assessment proved that the students’ speaking performance got better from the first meeting to the last meeting. And the result of interview given to the students shown that most of the students were enthusiastic to follow the teaching and learning process by applying self-assessment technique conducted by the researcher. It means that the implementation had positive effect on improving students’ speaking skill and also the data from the interview generated students’ perspective and commentary about self-assessment show that the students agreed that self-assessment is such an effective technique to improve students’ speaking skill. The researcher concluded that the implementation of self-assessment technique on students’ speaking skill was successful and it was an appropriate technique in improving students’ speaking skill.
